Description

This lovely work of fine art by accomplished artist Diane Williams was created with mixed media on a cradled wooden panel. Jumping over the Broom is part of her Gesturing the Void series that exhibits bold, confident strokes similar to those perfected by the Chinese masters. Williams’ explains her inspiration for this gem:

“The tradition of jumping over the broom came from Africa and is still used to refer to marriage by many African Americans. Brooms were waved over the heads of marrying couples to ward off spirits. The couple would often but not always jump over the broom at the end of the wedding ceremony as a sign of commitment to the home and to each other.

For me the symbol of the broom goes back to childhood where my parents snapped a photo of me sweeping off the porch. It is truly my symbol of home and family. ”

With 1.5” deep natural wood edges, Jumping over the Broom is wired and ready to hang. It also works nicely grouped with other works in the series, including Dancing the Ancestors, Folding Paper, Spring Thaw, Golden Lotus, Dancing Brush and Navigating Still Water. Alone or in a group, Jumping over the Broom will make a powerful yet elegant statement.
