Debbi Smith Rourke

I am a contemporary painter working primarily in oil, drawn to the expressive power of light—how it shapes form, atmosphere and emotion. Across my work, light becomes both subject and language. Whether painting a still life, an abstract field of color, or works from my Light Series, I seek to distill the visible world into essential rhythms of movement, balance and illumination.

My practice moves fluidly between representation and abstraction. Years of observational painting ground my still lifes in structure and presence, where light reveals the quiet beauty and inner luminescence of everyday forms. In my abstract work, light expands beyond depiction, emerging through layered color, gesture and atmosphere as both a physical phenomenon and a poetic, emotional force.

I grew up in Austin and studied Advertising at the University of Texas before spending a decade as a copywriter and creative director in Chicago and Dallas. After returning to Austin, I continued painting alongside my creative career, studying with accomplished artists and exhibiting in local and national juried shows. In 2024 I retired from advertising to focus fully on my studio practice, where light, color and the act of painting itself have become my central work.
