Smooth Sailing, oil-on-canvas oceanscape by Northern California artist Donna McGinnis, has a variety of textures and layers created from palette knife application. This artwork depicts the ocean using deep and soft blues and greens, and a whispy sky above with no clear horizon line. The aqua coloring is hypnotic and calming. McGinnis adds, “The recent oceanscape paintings are the result of spending time on the north coast of Sonoma Country during a high surf period in December. The waves were made big by recent storms. The paintings are from my memory of watching the ocean for long periods of time and the paintings are images from my mind. I consider them abstract but they are easily recognizable as being the ocean. I hope the strength and energy of the water is shown in the work.”
