About the Artist
Located in the American Southwest, Diane Sandlin creates contemporary abstract paintings that are informed by spaciousness, large skies and a can-do optimism steeped with individualism. Influences also include sights, sounds, conversations, poetry. Dualities. The nexus between the man-made and natural worlds. The beauty of decay apparent in crumbling structures. With this backdrop, her work often features subjects personally riveting — issues involving empowerment, cultural inequities.

With a minimalist aesthetic, universal symbols such as circles and vessels appear frequently as do geometric anthropomorphic figures. She communicates in a way that is personal and universal and her paintings have been compared to visual poetry, growing more nuanced with careful reading.

Artist Statement:

“There is an ambiguous history in my paintings – one story on the surface and another underneath. Reading a painting as a poem, it’s comprised of words under the words. This in-between area is where I reside. My hope is for the viewer to discover their own interpretation of the work and their place in it. At that point, communication comes full circle – the painting, the artist and the observer.” – Diane Sandlin
