CARRIE MEGAN
Landscapes in Oil
About the Artist
Originally from NYC, Carrie began her career as a graphic designer and art director, where she worked for many years on branding and packaging for a diverse range of consumer products. Marriage and a position at Gillette as a design manager took her to the Boston area, where she settled and raised three children. Along the way, she discovered the exacting art of botanical drawing and painting, which lead her on a journey to capture the minute details and ephemeral beauty of plant life in growth and decay. After many years working as a botanical artist and teacher, she expanded her focus to take in the broad vistas of nature through the art of landscape painting. This dramatic shift in view from micro to macro, has informed a different approach to how she creates art, challenging her to look beyond the literal and to tap into a more visceral way of working.

Through the rich medium of oils, her exploration of light and color is an attempt to capture the unique sense of place, time and emotion evoked by each landscape that she paints. From the mountains to the sea, the diverse environments of New England has inspired the work that she does, both plein air and in the studio.

More recently Carrie has started a series she has titled “Home” paintings: “Home, at its most basic, is a place of shelter. For most, it is the place that anchors one’s daily journey. Ideally, it is a place for respite as well as a place that offers a sense of belonging. I cannot begin to imagine the horrors of having to flee one’s home to seek safety or of never having a home to begin with. It is with these thoughts among others, that I have begun a series of ‘Home’ paintings. Using pared down imagery, each painting is a unique representation of ‘Home’ as a symbol for all of its varied meanings and associations.”
